At Robins Foundation, we work to improve the quality of life for the whole Richmond community. And one key to a good quality of life is mental health.
According to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Report (USGR), one in five children and adolescents in this county has a mental disorder (most commonly anxiety, mood or disruptive disorders) that interferes with daily functioning. Yet, fewer than one of five of these children receive the mental health services they need. Left untreated, these childhood mental disorders can lead to school failure as well as family conflicts, substance abuse, violence and even suicide.
We have a strong interest in investing in and partnering with programs, like ChildSavers, whose programs and services help to enrich the lives of children and families.
ChildSavers is dedicated to serving children who have organic mental health issues, as well as children whose mental issues have arisen as a result of having experienced trauma. They do this by providing trauma-informed, evidenced-based therapies for children ages 2 to 17. Their Mental Health Services offer outpatient mental health therapy for children and their Immediate Response program assists children in the immediate aftermath of a crisis or trauma. These services offer reassurance, healing, and the skills necessary to achieve normal life and development.
In 2016, the ChildSavers, in partnership with Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) and Richmond Public Schools (RPS) was awarded The Lora M. and E. Claiborne Robins Community Innovation Grant (CIG) for their collaborative program, the Richmond Public Schools Resiliency Partnership. The partnership was developed to address the increase and impact of violence experienced by children and its deepening effect on children’s school and achievement performance.
Visit ChildSavers for more information on their outpatient services, and to learn how you can help end the stigma around mental health issues by raising awareness about mental health and trauma.
